© ESSKA 2015. It is argued that traditional apprenticeship training lacks objectivity in the assessment of operative ability (Darzi et al. 1999). The implementation of standardized curricula aims to ensure all trainees achieve critical competencies and so the role of simulation is becoming more important (Motola et al. 2013). It is imperative, however, that any simulation models developed provide a fair reflection of the tasks that they are designed to replicate and their use genuinely improves the relevant skill domains they are aimed at improving.
